VRKM – What is a dissertation? How is it different from an essay?
There are certain clear distinctions that need to be made, such as the fact that the length of an essay is normally between 1500 and 2500 words, and the fact that you will have someone else guide you through the process of writing step by step. Take for instance the following: It is necessary to provide a description and analysis of the most important globalisation theories.
You are the one who is in charge of deciding what your dissertation will be about. In the year 1651, the term “an extended written treatment of a subject” was first used in the English language. This was the first time the word was ever used. This definition acts as a great starting point for further discussion.
The Latin term “dissertare,” from which our English word “dissertation” is derived, literally means “to debate.” This adds a new piece of information that might be helpful in some circumstances.
What associations does the word ‘conversation’ bring to mind for you? A discussion that takes place between two or more competing camps of thought or factions of a political party. Therefore, a dissertation will not only explore a subject, but it will also investigate several points of view on that subject.
The following is one more definition of a dissertation that brings attention to some of the more significant components of the document: “a substantial paper that gives evidence of the candidate’s mastery both of her own subject and of scholarly method,” “a substantial paper that gives evidence of the candidate’s mastery both of her own subject and of scholarly method.” “a substantial paper that is typically based on original research and that gives evidence of the candidate’s mastery both of her own subject and of scholarly method.”
However, despite the fact that it will show that the author is informed about her subject, the most essential facts, and the numerous points of view that are related with it, a dissertation will also forward a point of view that is the result of original research. It is important to keep in mind that “original” does not mean “something that has never been done before,” but rather “something that you do for yourself.” This is a distinction that should not be overlooked.
A candidate “gives evidence of their mastery […] of scholarly method” by submitting a dissertation as part of the application process. Do not let the fact that accomplishing something seems to be an extremely difficult task discourage you. This sentence is reminding you that you need to step up your game if you want to be able to write a dissertation that will be accepted by your chosen institution. When your paper is to be written in a “scholarly method,” you will be expected to do a great deal more reading and study than is typically required for an undergraduate work of this kind. It implies that the work you generate will display accuracy and competence in its examination of a subject as well as its discussion of that subject. It also indicates that the work you produce will be of a high quality. It suggests that your presentation will show evidence of critical analysis, which involves taking a step back from the topic at hand and considering the benefits and drawbacks associated with the subject matter. This means that you will demonstrate a grasp of the fact, for example, that certain aspects of particular theories or points of view are up for debate. You will do so by demonstrating that you are aware of this fact.
